Eighteen Athletes from eleven different schools have been named the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

Each athlete was nominated by his or her coach. All statistics incurred from August 29th through September 3rd.

Below is a look at each Athlete of the Week by sport:

 

Tennis

Name: Rachel Strohmeyer and Peyton Kovach (Doubles Team)

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Liberty High School

Stats:  As a team, they won their match against Howland 2-0

Coaches Quote:  “Peyton and Rachel won their second match this season, the first being against Niles earlier in the year, and their second this week against Howland,” according to coach Billy Green.  “Both girls are excellent communicators on the court and are the epitome of having fun playing the game of tennis. They are dual-sport athletes as they both play on the soccer team as well. They’re the very definition student-athlete and I’m extremely proud to be their coach!”

 

Volleyball

 

Name: Mia Greco

Grade:  Senior

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats: 20 service points,  22 Kills, .272 hitting %, 18 Blocks, 12 Digs

Coaches Quote:  “Mia is an outstanding all around volleyball player that fills up the stat sheet and is a great team player with a competitive spirit,” according to coach Stephen Mohr.  “Mia was the top player with kills on our team along with the highest kill percent as well.”

 

Name: Kendall Brunn

Grade:  Junior

School: Campbell Memorial High School

Stats:59 Kills (+ .398 hitting %), 7 blocks, 3 aces, 18 digs, and 2 assists

Coaches Quote:  “Junior, Middle Hitter, Kendall Brunn led Campbell Memorial to a 2-1 record on the week,” according to coach Tyler Allen.  “She led the team with 59 kills, averaging just under 20 per match while hitting +.398%. Kendall also added 7 blocks and 3 aces. Kendall has improved her leadership skills and has been working hard all season.”

 

Name: Abbey Emch

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Crestview High School

Stats: Last week we went 2-0 (6-0 in sets)and Abbey had 29 kills, 3 blocks and  led us in serve receive with 94% accuracy. 

Coaches Quote: “Abbey is dominating the net in our 4-0 start,” said coach Alisha Auer.  “She is full of energy and excitement and is making an impact in all 6 rotations this year.”

 

Name: Lisa Eichert

Grade:  Junior

School: Western Reserve High School

Stats: 27 kills 34 digs 4 service aces 29 service receives  3 assists over 3 games with a record of 2-1

Coaches Quote:  “Lisa the co-captain of our team and plays a vital role in every rotation,” according to coach Kristine Hughes.  “She is second in stats for kills and has the most digs on our team.  Lisa is a smart player and knows how to place the ball on a serve and a kill to score. She also does an excellent job on serve receive with the highest on our team.  As you can see she threw in a few assists this week which is why she is an all around great player and a big asset to our Western Reserve team.”

 

Football

Name: Jahvian Cundiff

Grade:  Senior

School: Sebring High School

Stats: 26 carries 117 yards, 1 pass completion 43yds

Coaches Quote: “Jahvian continues to lead by effort and example,” according to coach Anthony Agresta.  “He is a pleasure to coach.”

 

Name: Mason Miller

Grade:  Senior

School: Mineral Ridge High School

Stats:  3 receptions for 95 yards and 2 TD’s, 11 total tackles and 1 Tackle for a Loss, 1/1 kicking extra points

Coaches Quote: “Mason Miller finished the first drive off vs Newton Falls with an amazing 26 yard diving catch for the first score of the game,” according to coach Brian Shaner.  “He later followed it up with a 46 yard TD reception to help expand the lead to 20-14. Mason battled being double teamed almost all night still ending up with 95 yards and 2 TD.  Mason also added 11tackles.”

 

Name: Nick Vesey

Grade:  Senior

School: Champion High School

Stats 15 rushes for 172 yards 2 TDs, 3 Receptions for 54 yards 1 TD

Coaches Quote: ” Nick was the catalyst for our offense in week three versus Southeast,” according to coach Tom Conrad. “We moved Nick to Tailback during our week two preparation and he learned a brand new position in about 5 days. That is a testament to Nick’s selflessness and his tremendous work ethic. Nick moved positions because it was what was best for the team. Nick lead by example last Friday night and motivated his teammates to elevate their play. He let the game come to him and didn’t try to do more than his job. He made huge plays for us down the stretch that catapulted us to a much needed victory.”

 

Name: Zachary Armstrong

Grade:  Senior

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats  No stats

Coaches Quote: “Zachary played a great game against Labrae Friday night while blocking up front on the offensive line” according to coach Nathan Brode.  “Zachary is one of the Captains on the Football Team.”

 

Name: Matthew Lucido

Grade:  Junior

School: Lowellville High School

Stats 4 reception 52 yard 1 Rec TD, 7 Tackles 2 TFL 1 INT 1 Def TD, 7 for 7 on PAT, 1 Punt 40 yards.  Kicked 2 onside kicks that were recovered

Coaches Quote: “Matt literally did everything that was asked of him,” according to coach Andrew Mamula.  “He is one of the few players in the area that has a major impact in all three phases of the game. His value on the field is also matched by value in the locker room. Matt is the first kid in the weight room and the last one to leave. He is a natural born leader and a vital part to our undefeated start.” 

 

 

Cross Country

Name: Nate Craver

Grade:  Freshman

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats:  Current 5k personal record: 22:31

Coaches Quote:  Nate is starting out with his first year of cross country as a freshmen,” according to coach Kayla Morrison.  “He has set high goals for himself for the season and has been working hard to meet those goals. In practices, Nate is already running consistenttimes, mastering his pace, and working hard better himself and his teammates.  Nate has raced in four 5ks since the start of the season and has dropped his personal record time EVERY race. At his most recent race he cut 41 seconds off of his previous personal record, and did it in the pouring rain!”

 

Soccer

Name: Joshua Biery

Grade:  Sophomore

School: LaBrae High School

Stats:  3 Goals and 1 Assist

Coaches Quote:  “Josh has a strong understanding of his position,” according to coach Worthy Cottrill.  “Josh works hard on every offensive attack and always plays to the whistle.  He is quick to recover when the ball is lost.  Josh has a competitive edge which rubs off on his teammates.”

 

Name: Kiara English

Grade:  Junior

School: Waterloo High School

Stats: 8 goals, including her 100th career goal, and four assists this week

Coaches Quote:  “Kaira is a junior captain and an excellent team leader,” according to coach Bill Jackson.  “Her incredible scoring rate is a true testament to her work ethic. She is never satisfied and always pushes herself to improve her game. It is important to know that she is also one of the most unselfish players I have ever coached, a true team-first player. Congratulations on goal 100 Kaira!”

 

Name: Jacob Sipka

Grade:  Junior

School: Newton Falls High School

Stats: 4 goals against Bristol

Coaches Quote: “Jacob’s ability to control the ball while viewing the field in search of the next move sets him above most,” according to coach Kassi Gant.  “His foot skills are excellent and he helps to put us in a scoring position each game.”

Name: Alex Rotuna

Grade:  Junior

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats:  2 Goals 

Coaches Quote:  “Alex found the back of the net twice in our 2-0 win,” according to coach Craig Fetkovich.  “The first one was off of a corner kick that he had to fight hard to win. His second goal came from a nice run onto a well placed through ball from a teammate.”

 

Golf

Name: Alivia Robinson

Grade:  Freshman

School: Mineral Ridge High School

Stats: Alivia shot two career bests last week in two of our golf matches and helped us win one of them. She shot a 60 the first match; and bested it with a 59 the next match.

Coaches Quote:  “Alivia has been such a great addition to the golf team,” according to coach Nick Flaviano.  “She is doing incredible for just starting the game of golf two months ago. Alivia has a really bright future and I can’t wait to see how it goes the next few years!”

 

Name: Trevor Simons

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Waterloo High School

Stats:  39 @ Olde Dutch Mill vs Mineral Ridge 45 @ Sugar Bush vs Garfield

Coaches Quote:  “Trevor was our scoring leader this week and propelled the team to two big victories against Mineral Ridge and Garfield,” according to coach Matthew Flanagan. “His 39 was a team low against Ridge and helped save a 1-shot victory. Against Garfield, Trevor’s 45 was good enough to be the match medalist.”

Stats:  Averaged a 40 for the week of play and a new personal record.
