Seventeen Athletes from ten different schools have been named the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

Each athlete was nominated by his or her coach. All statistics incurred from September 26th through October 1st.

Below is a look at each Athlete of the Week by sport:

 

Volleyball

 

Name: Taylor Burns

Grade:  Sophomore

School: LaBrae High School

Stats: 20 Kills and 11 Digs

Coaches Quote:  “Taylor is a great, young asset to our team.  As a sophomore, she serve receives all six rotations, anticipates well and produces great hitting options from her passes,” according to coach Courtney Kish.

 

Name: Callisto Ridgeway

Grade:  Junior

School: Champion High School

Stats:   Serving- 57-59 12 Aces. Ball Handling 250/259 37 Assists  

Coaches Quote:  “Callisto is a main part of our offense.  She works hard to get our hitters a good set and is a good team player,” according to coach Kelly Henson.

 

Name: Angeliz Diaz

Grade:  Junior

School: Campbell Memorial High School

Stats: 20 Kills, Serve Receive of 1.60, 55 Service Receptions, 21 digs, 3 Aces

Coaches Quote: “Junior, Outside Hitter, Angeliz Diaz is making large strides as a player, both on the offensive and defensive side of the court. She led Campbell Memorial to a 1-1 record on the week, including a conference win against Champion. She led all outside hitters with 20 kills and added 21 digs. Angeliz Diaz is a hard worker and a great all around young lady,” according to coach Tyler Allen.

 

Name: Joy Mohr

Grade:  Freshmen

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats: 18 service points, 16 aces, 4 kills, 10 digs, 20 assists, 2 solo blocks.

Name: Dailen Brown

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Western Reserve High School

Stats: Dailen had 18 kills, 8 blocks, and 3 assists.

Coaches Quote:  “Dailen is an outstanding volleyball player who plays a vital part for our team,” according to Kristine Hughes.  “She is a very hard worker and has a lot of potential in volleyball.  She has a total of 51 blocks on the season, and she is the number one blocker on our team.”

 

Football

 

Name: Luke Henning

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Western Reserve High School

Stats: 27 carries for 211 yards and 4TDs – 5 of 13 for 72 yards passing – 5 tackles and 2 INT’s on defense

Coaches Quote: “Luke was a major factor in our rivalry win against McDonald,” according to coach John Armeni.  “He made plays on both sides of the ball and threw us on his back in the critical moments of the game.”

 

Name: Bryce Rohrman

Grade:  Junior

School: Mineral Ridge High School

Stats:   9 Tackles  –  3 Tackles for a loss  –  2 Sacks  –  4 carries for 21 Yards

Coaches Quote: “Bryce has been an unsung hero of our defense! Standing at only 5'7 he plays a HUGE role at Nose
Tackle.  Bryce was a constant fixture in the Jackson Milton backfield during last Friday's 42-7 victory.  On the night Bryce racked up 9 tackles, 3TFL and 2 Sacks. Bryce also saw his first action on offense carrying the ball 4 times for 21 yards,” according to coach Brian Shaner. 

 

Name: Keegan Sell

Grade:  Junior

School: Garfield High School

Stats Week 7 stats-4 carries for 105 yds and 1 TD, 15 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 sack, 1 Int returned for TD (all in one half only)

Grade:  Senior

School: Crestview High School

Stats28 rushes   178 yds.   3 TD  1 conversion  –  14 tackles   7 TFL   1 sack   1 blocked kick

Coaches Quote:   “Roclen is an old-school player and is a mainstay on both sides of the ball. Roc plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” according to coach Paul Cusick.

 

Cross Country

 

Name: Timmy Pappagallo

Grade:  Senior

School: Mineral Ridge High School

Stats:  Top 10 at the Trumbull County Championships

Coaches Quote:  “After a season-ending injury in Fall 2021 (broken foot), Timmy earned “Top 10″ All-Trumbull County honors in a star-studded championship meet last week at Brookfield High School,” according to coach Ron Toth.

 

Name: Kalliope Ivari

Grade:  Senior

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats: Mahoning County Championship: 27th place – 24:37  –  Clipper Invitational: 28th place – 24:25  –  Current 5k personal record time: 24:02

Coaches Quote:  Kalliope is at the peak of her 6th and final year in cross country,” according to coach Kyla Morrison.  ” As a senior leader on the team she is working hard to make the most of her final season of cross country. Kalli set a personal goal for herself of 24:00 by the end of the season and her current personal record time is only 2 seconds away from hitting that goal! She works hard at practices and is always having fun and laughing. We’re so proud of you, Kalli!”

 

Soccer

Name: Sydney Jackson

Grade:  Junior

School: Waterloo High School

Stats:   5 assists

Coaches Quote:  “Sydney had five assists this week, which helped her team complete a 3-0 week,” according to coach Bill Jackson.  “She has been working hard on her field vision and her spacing. She is a junior captain and does a great job helping the team stay in shape both offensively and defensively. She is also our corner-kick taker and works extremely hard with her teammates on where they need the ball to succeed. She has developed into a leader this season and has been an important part of the team’s success.

 

Name: Kylee Fetkovich

Grade:  Senior

School: Jackson-Milton High School

Stats:  5 goals & 4 assists.

Coaches Quote:  ” Our team played 4 games this week.  Kylee had a great week.  She is a steady and consistent team player, she’s always looking to make a good pass.  She continues to play an important role on our team as her senior season winds down,” according to coach Craig Fetkovich.

 

Name: Cariña Garcia

Grade:  Senior

School: Liberty High School

Stats:  Blocked Shot: 4  –  Clearance: 18  –  Interception: 15  –  Tackle: 21  –  Minutes played: 75 minutes played. (She had to come off the field for five minutes because of injury.)

Coaches Quote:  “Cariña is a beast of the field.  All other coaches know to watch for #17. She works so hard and never gives up. I have seen her sprint and entire length of the field to stop a goal.  Cariña’s prowess helped new players step in at defense,” according to coach Eileen Sanchez.

 

Name: Matt Russell

Grade:  Senior

School: Champion High School

Stats:  20 saves against and 1 shut out.

Coaches Quote:  Matt was a strong reason the team was able to win 3 matches in four days last week. Two of those matches were in the conference. A mixture of timely saves and aggressive play in the box set the tone and helped to support his back line,” according to coach Jaimie Futchko.

 

Name: Alex Andrukat

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Newton Falls High School

Stats: Alex scored the first goal I. Our matchup with Liberty.

Coaches Quote:  “Alex has been a strong contender on offense this season, and often starts our scoring drive for the team,” according to coach Frank Tatarka.

Golf

 

Name: Kennady Grace

Grade:  Junior

School: Champion Local High School

Stats:  Number one player on the team.  

Coaches Quote: Kennady is the number one on our golf team,” according to coach Elisa Morello.  “Kennady’s dedication to the sport is so inspiring. She constantly is pushing herself to be her very best. Kennady finished her round at sectionals with a 91. This score drove our team to victory, placing our team in the top four.  With Kennady’s hard work, she was able to help advance our team to districts.”
