Eight Athletes from Six different schools have been named the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

Each athlete was nominated by his or her coach. All statistics incurred from December 19th through January 7th.

Below is a look at each Athlete of the Week by sport:

 

Girls Basketball

 

Name: Maddie  & Blake Gilbert

Grade:  Senior

School:  Sebring McKinley High School

Stats: 

Coaches Quote:  Blake and Maddie tallied 27 of the team’s 34 points in the  Trojans overtime win Saturday vs Lordstown. Maddie scored the tying basket with 6 seconds left in regulation, and Blake scored 4 of the team’s 9 points in the overtime,” according to head coach Anthony Agresta.

 

Name: Diamon Sims

Grade:  Junior

School: Campbell Memorial High School

Stats:  11 points and 5.3 rebounds

Coaches Quote:  “Diamon has been the emotional and offensive leader of this basketball team.  She has shown steady improvement throughout the year in every facet of the game, and truly has been an absolute pleasure to coach this year. Way to go Diamon,” according to head coach John Childers.

 

Name: Cailey Wellman

Grade:  Junior

School: Brookfield High School

Stats: 11.0 ppg, 13.8 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.3 spg

Coaches Quote:  “Cailey was our leading rebounder and 2 nd leading scorer in the span of the last 4 games. She gave us great things on the defensive end by rebounding and blocking shots. On the offensive end she was a great presence in the post,” according to head coach Ken Forsythe.

 

Name: Ella Kuszmaul

Grade:  Freshmen

School: Labrae High School

Stats:  4 games – 12.75 ppg, 6.25 rpg

Coaches Quote:  “Ella has been a consistent scorer for us all season.  She continues to work hard to improve her game.  Ella had a double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) in our game against Champion,” according to head coach Mandy Rowe.

 

Boys Basketball

Name: Donovan Pawlowski

Grade:  Senior

School: Brookfield High School

Stats:  (Last 5 Games) Average 19 points, 4 assists, and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Coaches Quote: “Donovan is one the hardest playing kids I have ever coached. He does not say much but he is the epitome of “leading by example,” according to head coach Shawn Hammond.

 

Name: Preston Gedeon

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Garfield High School

Stats:  Averaged 27.5 points , 3 rebounds and 1 steal per game

Coaches Quote: “Preston came up huge in two conference victories on the road.  In Tuesday’s matchup at Champion, Preston recorded a career high 28 points and followed it up with 27 in a victory at Liberty.  Preston’s growth and impact this season has been remarkable.  It is a credit to the hard work he puts in during and out of season.  Both performances were critical in helping our team win,” according to head coach Andrew Olesky.

Name: Lucas Sokol

Grade:  Sophomore

School: Jackson Milton High School

Stats:   3-1 for the week

Coaches Quote:  “Lucas put in a strong week of practice and chained together 3 impressive wins to find himself in the finals at the JM Invitational Tournament,” according to head coach Brian Weidenthal.
